A minimalist room with a single matte-black grow tent in the corner glowing softly
Issue 01 · The Build

Inside a Verdisgrow Room

A 4 m² spare room. One tent. Honest hardware, quietly assembled. This is the build we keep coming back to — the one that proves you don't need a workshop to grow seriously.

The best indoor garden is the one you forget is there. No hum, no hot-spots, no orange light bleeding out from under a door at 2 a.m. Just a clean black box in the corner of a room, doing its work.

When we set out to specify our reference build, we gave ourselves three constraints: it had to fit in a flat, it had to run on a standard 16 A circuit, and a guest had to be unable to tell it was there from the next room. The kit on this page is what survived.

The unboxing: a tent reads like a piece of luggage before it becomes architecture.

Chapter 01

The shell

A grow tent is, fundamentally, a light-tight container. Everything else is detail. We chose 600D oxford fabric over the heavier 900D for one reason: a softer skin folds quietly, and a quieter skin is a calmer object in a room. The frame is 22 mm steel, double-stitched corners, and a mylar interior that throws light back without the usual cheap silver glare.

Hardware should defer to the room. The tent is matte, the cables are routed, and the only thing that announces itself is the faint warm glow at the seam.
LM301B diodes, passive heatsink, remote driver. The driver lives outside the tent — quieter and cooler.

Chapter 02

The light

A 320 W bar fixture is, for a 1 m² footprint, almost boringly correct. 2.9 µmol/J of efficacy means it puts more energy into photons than into heat — which means a smaller fan, which means a quieter room. We hung it 45 cm above the canopy line, dimmed to 80% for the first two weeks, and didn't think about it again.

Chapter 03

The air

Negative pressure is the whole game. We chose a 6-inch EC inline fan paired with an RC-48 carbon filter. The fan runs at 30 % most days; you can't hear it from the sofa. The ducting is insulated three-layer aluminium, routed in soft curves rather than tight bends — the difference between a whisper and a hum.

The fifteen-minute weekly routine

  1. Monday
Top-up reservoir, check pH (target 6.2).
  2. Wednesday
Wipe tent windows, inspect seams, lift LED if needed.
  3. Friday
Replace pre-filter sock if it looks tired.
  4. Sunday
Read EC, take a photo, write one line in the notebook.
